Milwaukee Public Schools Leap Ahead with Sourcewell and Outdoor-Fit
Outdoor fitness equipment for a healthier future.
In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing the physical well-being of its students, Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS), in collaboration with Sourcewell, Outdoor-Fit Exercise Systems (Outdoor-Fit), and Midwest Playscapes, successfully installed over 60 Helios-NA Multigyms across various schools in the district. This project marks a significant milestone in promoting physical fitness and wellness within the school boundaries and extending its benefits to the surrounding communities.
A New Dawn for School Fitness
The addition of 61 Helios-NA Multigyms throughout the Milwaukee Public School system in the spring and fall of 2023 has set a new benchmark for school fitness programs nationwide. The initiative, born out of the need to provide students with accessible and engaging physical fitness options, quickly became a community-wide phenomenon, with students, teachers, and residents embracing the new installations.
MPS is committed to fostering environments that promote physical health and community engagement. Installing outdoor fitness equipment has been a game-changer, offering the students and their families unparalleled access to top-notch fitness facilities at no cost.
The Journey to a Fitter Future
This project began with diligent research and a quest to find the perfect outdoor fitness solution. Roger Masarik, Adaptive PE Specialist for MPS, discovered Outdoor-Fit during routine walks in Humboldt Park, which already had a multi gym from Outdoor-Fit. The project took off with the support of a Federal Grant focusing on enhancing outdoor fitness initiatives. The collaborative efforts of MPS, Sourcewell, and Outdoor-Fit, facilitated by the adaptability and customer service of Sourcewell, ensured the swift and successful implementation of the project.
Building Stronger Communities
Beyond the immediate physical benefits, the Helios-NA Multigyms have become a focal point for community engagement. Students are regularly seen challenging themselves and each other, particularly enjoying the pull-up station's arm hang challenge. Phys. Ed teachers at the schools also benefit from using the outdoor fitness equipment on their lunch breaks and finding ways to integrate the equipment into their curriculum. Additionally, the initiative has seen a positive spill-over effect, with residents utilizing the outdoor fitness equipment after school and on the weekends, strengthening community bonds and promoting a culture of health and wellness.
Celebrating Success
As the 2023-2024 school year progresses, the impact of outdoor fitness equipment on student and community well-being continues to grow. This project's success serves as a model for other school districts looking to enrich their educational and community spaces through physical fitness and exemplifies how cooperative efforts can lead to extraordinary outcomes for communities.
