Don McDougall Park is a baseball and recreation complex at Mill River Resort in West Prince, Prince Edward Island, built for over $2 million and officially opened on July 31, 2026. Alongside PEI's first artificial turf baseball field, the park includes a 600-metre paved walking track lined with two outdoor gym spaces equipped by Outdoor-Fit. Delivered through a partnership between Baseball PEI, the Province of Prince Edward Island, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, the Canada Games Legacy Fund, Jays Care Foundation, and Mill River Resort, the accessible, ASTM-compliant fitness stations serve athletes, walkers, and residents of all ages year-round.

We are opening a place that will attract events, support local businesses, [and] strengthen western baseball.

The Challenge: Building a Year-Round Recreation Asset, Not Just a Ball Field

West Prince is a rural region where residents have long travelled outside the community for modern sport and fitness facilities. When Baseball PEI set out to build a destination-calibre ball park on land donated by Mill River Resort owner Don McDougall — the PEI native and Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame builder who helped bring the Toronto Blue Jays to Toronto in 1977 — the vision was bigger than baseball.

A single-sport facility risks sitting idle outside game days. To justify over $2 million in public and charitable investment, the park needed to serve the whole community every day of the year: players warming up, parents and spectators between innings, and residents of all ages using the site as everyday recreation infrastructure. That meant designing in fitness amenities that could handle Maritime weather, unsupervised public use, and a wide range of ages and abilities — without adding a maintenance burden to a non-profit operator.

The Solution: Two Outdoor Gyms Along the Walking Track

The park's 600-metre paved walking track is lined with two distinct outdoor gym pads, each equipped by Outdoor-Fit and positioned so the track and gyms work together as a continuous circuit for warm-up, strength, and mobility training.

Fitness Pad One — Strength Foundation

Pad one pairs the Helios Multigym with the Flex Multi-Stretch station, delivering multi-user bodyweight and resistance training in a compact footprint suited to athletes preparing for a game and residents completing a lap-and-lift circuit.

Fitness Pad Two — Full Functional Circuit

Pad two builds a complete functional training zone around the Apollo Multigym, adding a Cali-Stretch & Suspension Station for mobility and suspension work, Cali-Agility Hurdle Set, and two sets of Cali-Plyo Boxes for agility and plyometric training, and a second Flex Multi-Stretch station. The combination supports genuine athletic conditioning — the kind of real exercise programming a U18 AA baseball program can actually use — while remaining approachable for first-time users.

All stations are ASTM-compliant, tamperproof, and weatherproof, engineered for unsupervised public use through PEI winters with minimal upkeep — a critical requirement for a facility operated by a non-profit organization.

This beautiful facility will add to the enjoyment of young baseball players.

How to Add Outdoor Fitness to Your Next Park Project

Don McDougall Park shows how outdoor fitness stations turn a single-sport facility into a year-round community asset, often for a small fraction of total project cost. Outdoor-Fit works with municipalities, non-profits and sport organizations to help design fitness pads that complement fields, trails and tracks.

Canadian municipalities, schools and non-profit organizations can purchase through Canoe, the Canadian cooperative purchasing group that offers Outdoor-Fit's equipment under the equivalent Sourcewell contract. US public agencies purchase through Sourcewell (contract 101625-ODR, 2026–2029). Outdoor-Fit also works through authorized dealers across North America, and the Fit-City Park & Recreation Program lets municipalities apply to receive an outdoor gym at a significant discount.

The two fitness pads support a mix of strength training, stretching, mobility, agility and bodyweight exercise.
